In a large saucepan over medium heat, bring sugar and water to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 3 minutes. Stir in the remaining ingredients.
Return mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes, pressing cranberries to "pop" them as they soften. Remove from heat and serve warm or cold.
