Hamburger Steaks with Mushrooms and Onions are melt-in-your-mouth, juicy beef patties cooked and served in a rich and flavorful gravy and topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions for a meal perfect for a weeknight or fancy enough for company!
What’s a hamburger steak? Is it a hamburger or is it steak? Or is it hamburger masquerading as a piece of steak (which, as a steak-lover myself, I’d find very annoying)? I wondered this when my in-laws ordered it at a restaurant a few weeks back. When the food came to our table, I was surprised. It definitely wasn’t steak, but it looked delicious. And my in-laws confirmed that it, in fact, was. It was a juicy, flavorful hamburger patty, topped with mushrooms and onions. The food blogger in me knew right then and there that I’d have to recreate my own version at home. So I created these Hamburger Steaks with Mushrooms and Onions.
Friends, I am SO glad I did. They are so juicy and so packed with flavor. They’re kind of a cross between meatloaf and bunless burgers. Best part? These Hamburger Steaks with Mushrooms and Onions are perfect for a weeknight dinner or for company. Plus, they’re super easy to prepare. Serve them alongside some mashed potatoes or rice…or go low carb and just serve them with fresh veggies! Either way, I guarantee you’ll impress your family or guests. PS: They’re also great as leftovers. I inhaled mine at work the next day. 🙂
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 pkg. onion soup mix
- 1-1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch
- 1 Tbsp cold water
- 1 Tbsp canola oil
- 1 8-oz pkg sliced mushrooms
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- In a large bowl, combine the bread crumbs, ground beef, egg, garlic, and salt and pepper (I just used my hands). Form into 4 even patties.
- In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and cold water. In another bowl, combine the onion soup mix and beef broth. Add cornstarch mixture and stir well to combine. Set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat canola oil. Add burgers and cook the burgers 2 minutes per side or until browned. Remove from pan.
- Add mushrooms and onion to pan and saute until mushrooms are browned. Add cornstarch/beef broth mixture and bring to a boil, stirring constantly until slightly thickened.
- Add burgers back to pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until burgers are done, about 6 minutes. Divide burgers onto four plates. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or veggies. Drizzle with gravy. Enjoy!
