Sweet home Alabama. Da na na na na na. Where the skies are so blue. Do you love country music? It’s not my favorite genre, but there are some pretty great country songs. One thing’s for sure: you gotta love southern country cooking. Especially when it involves BBQ sauce, the quintessential component of good ‘ol BBQ. Why else would they have like 10 different flavors at BBQ restaurants? Carolina. Honey. Spicy. Cajun. Smoky. Brown Sugar. Jack Daniels. And that’s just a few. But you have to admit, the roast chicken, ribs, pulled pork, and brisket at these restaurants would be nothing without the sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy, sometimes zesty, sometimes smoky BBQ sauce.
I’m kind of obsessed with BBQ sauce, actually. Fries dipped in BBQ sauce? A bazillion times better than fries dipped in ketchup. And don’t even get me started on fry sauce that mixes ketchup and mayo. BBQ is the way to go, people! I don’t have an aversion to ketchup. In fact, I quite like it. But I’ll choose BBQ every time.
And this Apple Butter BBQ sauce is SO easy and SO flavorful, I just had to share it. It’s sweet, spicy, and smoky all at the same time. The apple butter gives it a sweet flavor with a slight hint of apple that is just enough to cause a flavor explosion that will have your taste buds doing the cowboy boogie. I’ve slathered it on burgers. AMAZING. On a roast turkey sandwich. MARVELOUS. Next up? Pulled pork sandwiches. You could just put it in a bowl and eat it by the spoonful. I won’t judge. In fact, I’d grab a bowl and spoon and sit down with ya. We could bust out some George Strait. Or some Shenandoah. There’s a line in their song, Next to You, Next to Me, that goes “Barbecue chicken in aluminum foil, just enough money for my gas and oil.” I think they were referring to chicken slathered in this Apple Butter BBQ Sauce when they wrote the song. Once you try it, you’ll want to write a song about it, too.

- 1 Tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tsp liquid smoke
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp ground pepper
- 1 cup (about 1 medium) onion, finely chopped

Erin, this sounds incredible. Thank you for the post. We have a chain of restaurants here in Canada called Montana’s Smoke House. They have an Apple Butter BBQ sauce that is to die for on ribs. . . I’ve been looking for a clone and can’t wait to try yours.
How did you like it on the pulled pork?

This is delicious. Made it for a super bowl party earlier this year and am making it again for a party tomorrow. I live near an orchard that makes its own apple butter, so I use that and it’s fantastic. Thanks for a great recipe!!!
