Did you know Sloppy Joe had a son? Yep. He found a beautiful sandwich who shared his penchant for untidiness and they fell in love. They married and eventually had a son—young Sloppy Joe, Jr. who was, of course, a slider. He possessed all the delicious, hearty filling that we have all grown to love in his parents, but he was much smaller. Perfect for a handheld snack or fun dinner for the family. Thank you, Sloppy Joe, for introducing Sloppy Joe Sliders to us. How shall we repay you? Eating your offspring, of course. Okay, just talking about eating the baby of anything is just plain awkward.
So let me just give you the mouthwatering lowdown. Each slider is topped with a slice of cheddar and then piled high with a filling of ground beef, celery, and onion in a sweet and tangy sauce. This one-pot recipe makes a lot of the filling and is perfect for leftovers. You can even freeze it to use for later!
- 1 10.75-oz can tomato soup
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 Tbsp white vinegar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1-1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 12 dinner rolls
- 6 slices cheddar cheese, cut in half
- In a medium bowl, combine the tomato soup, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and garlic powder. Set aside.
- In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add celery and onion and cover the pan. Cover and cook an additional 5 minutes. Drain grease.
- Return pan to skillet and turn heat to low. Stir in tomato sauce mixture and simmer, stirring frequently, until heated through. Remove from heat.
- Slice each dinner roll in half. Top each with a ½-slice of cheddar cheese, and then about 3 Tbsp of filling.
