I heard something on a podcast that had me almost falling out of my seat. Well…okay, not really. I was in my car and falling out of my seat would have taken quite a bit of effort. But still, it freaked me out. The host reminded me that Christmas is SEVEN WEEKS AWAY! Does that seem too soon to anyone else? I know we still have Thanksgiving to look forward to, but I know how fast seven weeks flies by. Crazy!
And the closer we get to Christmas, the more I start to crave one of the best flavor combos known to man—chocolate and orange. I had never had chocolate orange before I got married. You’d think I lived under a rock. Thankfully, I married someone who is a huge fan of anything chocolate orange and he introduced me to it. And my mouth was like, “Sweet dang, where have you been all my life?”
And I’m not alone. I made these chocolate orange cookies from Six Sisters’ Stuff for a cookie exchange a few years ago and everyone raved. It really is a match made in heaven.
Oh, and while we’re on the subject:
Dear Mars,
Please bless us with the deliciousness of your limited edition chocolate orange M&Ms again this year. You teased us with them a few years ago (offering only a limited amount in select stores…sniffle) and we have been salivating ever since.
Sincerely,
Hungry Mouths Who Ignore The Waistline’s Objection To Junk Food Everywhere
So we have chocolate orange cookies and M&Ms and Utah Truffles has a crazy good chocolate orange truffle. But have you ever had Chocolate Orange Brownies? If your answer is no, scroll down to the recipe RIGHT THIS SECOND. Because you can’t allow your mouth to go without experiencing it a moment longer. It’s never too early to bake a batch of these. Your family (and mouth) will thank you.
- ¾ cup butter, cubed
- 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
- 3 eggs
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon orange extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 bar of orange chocolate, chopped (I used Chocolove's 3.2-oz. orange peel in dark chocolate)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 13x9-inch baking dish.
- In a microwave, melt butter and chocolate; stir until smooth. Cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar. Stir in chocolate mixture. Beat in extract. Gradually add flour to chocolate mixture.
- Pour into baking dish. Sprinkle with orange chocolate. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean (do not overbake).
- Cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into squares and serve with vanilla ice cream.
